14 december 2010 - MADINA: Officials from six government agencies and 40 security officers, including Maj. Gen. Awad Al-Qahtani, Director of Police in Madina, and 12 women jailers restored order at a girls’ orphanage after some female inmates rioted and held the orphanage’s principal and social workers, according to sources.
The situation at Orphan’s Village was resolved peacefully and there were no injuries, officials said. Hatim Ameen Bari, Director of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Madina didn’t elaborate on the causes of the incident due to its sensitivity.

Before they came out of the orphanage, the rioting girls were throwing stones at some girls who were passing by, according to sources.

Bari and some female supervisors from the ministry’s branch in Madina arrived at the scene and made efforts to control the situation, officials said.

A source said a committee of officials from the ministry and Madina Police had probed a similar incident in the past month.

The investigation included scrutiny of security guards deployed at the facility, the source added.

The committee has completed the investigations and submitted its recommendations to Prince Abdulaziz Bin Majed, Emir of Madina, the source said.

The orphanage, which shelters 60 female orphans, witnessed a similar incident when its staff poured diesel fuel on the walls to prevent inmates from escaping, which led to the intervention of members of the National Society for Human Rights in Madina.

The members, who made it clear that the action violated the orphans’ rights, said the riots were caused by a lack of a rehabilitation program, poor standard of living and services and a lack of psychologists.

14 December 2010 - Thousands of college students demonstrated today in Rome and major cities in a day of action against the Gelmini reform and in support of the no-confidence vote against Berlusconi. Among them, however, are also added to the social centres and militant black bloc. And after the confidence in the House, the violence broke out.

Black Bloc activists and militants from the social centres, who had joined the student marches in the morning, reached corso Rinascimento, a step away from the Senate, presided over by the police. At Porta del Popolo police charged protesters engaged in heavy stone-throwing, to back them off to the Tiber. The bulk of the procession is split: one part is directed at the Flaminio district, the other Prati. A difficult day today for the Capital. In the streets, on the day in Parliament voted confidence in the Berlusconi government, university and high school students, along with temporary workers, workers, researchers, Aquila earthquake survivors and activists from struggles for housing and social welfare gathered under the name "united against the crisis."

13/12/2010 - The public prosecutor proposed that the defendant be found guilty for the robbery, which he has accepted, as well as the attempted homicide against the guard of the bank.
However he asked to change the criminal charge of criminal organisation he faces to the delinquency of “gang” since after his first trial acquittal for six of the seven robberies that he was initially accused of, the evidence of “continuous action” is “missing”. For this robbery Giannis Dimitrakis had been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The public prosecutor, however, proposes basically to decrease his sentence since he asks he be exempted for two more attempted homicides against two cops for which he had been sentenced at the first trial. As for the injury of the police guard of the bank the Public Prosecutor stresses that there is no homicide intention from the defendant but only his “mental subscription to the perpetrators”. “Maybe he did not shoot himself but the perpetrators left organised and together in a way that shows that they had decided together before hand how to react to a potential obstacle”, he said.
The public prosecutor in order to justify his proposal characterized “contradictory and vague, the testimonies of the police officers”, while he stressed that “in the area they only found one bullet, a fact that shows that the defendant did not shoot continiously”. He asked though that of the mitigations that he asks for are recognized.
Earlier in his plea Giannis mentioned: “My punishment is a field for fighting and conflict with authority. The robbery was a representative solution for my ideological and existential problems. It is the answer to the question of how an anarchist goes on. In the dilemma if I shall remain a weak-minded spectator or an active citizen I decided to participate. In the end we will win!!!!”
He called “comrades” the wanted Seisidis and Tsironis, as well as the arrested as members of Conspiracy Cells of Fire. He made a specific mention to Lambros Foundas that was killed in a clash with police officers in Dafni area and stressed that “in the Revolutionary Struggle case they criminalized human relations in a setting of American cutting similar to the 17 November group” and added: “it is a death that has been justified by the regime with the phrase “terrorist that died when he avoided arrest”.
G. Dimitrakis ended “I was I am and I will be an anarchist. As long as I live and breathe the journey will continue”.
The trial will resume on the 23d of December when it is also expected the decision will be taken.

Residents of Keratea, southeast of Athens, clashed with riot police yesterday and on Saturday as they attempted to prevent efforts to construct a new landfill in the area. Police used tear gas on both days and several people suffered minor injuries as officers attempted to stop angry locals from blocking the site in the Ovriokastro area. Keratea and Grammatiko, northeast of Athens, were designated several years ago as the sites where Attica’s new landfills would be built but the schemes have been held up by legal wrangles and residents’ protests.

Eastbourne, Sussex, UK - Arson probe into retail park fire

13.12.2010 - A fire at a retail park in Eastbourne that damaged three shops was started deliberately, fire crews believe.
More than 80 firefighters tackled the blaze at the Crumbles Retail Park, in Sovereign Harbour, which started at 2030 GMT on Saturday.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the fire started towards the rear of Boots.
Shoppers were evacuated from the Asda supermarket and Next clothes store but nobody was injured.

'Deliberate act'
A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was put out at 1400 GMT on Sunday.
He said: "An investigation has concluded that the fire is most likely to have been caused by a deliberate act."
A spokeswoman for Boots said the company was working closely with police and fire officers.
Det Insp Paul Phelps, of Sussex Police, said: "Four national businesses have all been badly damaged and at such a busy time of the year it will no doubt have a knock-on effect to the local economy."

Buenos Aires, Argentina - 1,000 squatters in Villa Soldati attacked by local residents

Police in Argentina have cordoned off an area of the capital, Buenos Aires, after a week which saw at least three people killed in clashes between squatters and local residents.
Around 1,000 people, many of Bolivian and Paraguayan origin, had pitched tents in a park after being evicted from an illegal shantytown.
When police failed to remove them, some local residents attacked the migrants and two Bolivian men and a Paraguayan woman were killed.
Police say they have now restored calm.

Clashes between readymade garment workers demonstrating against a decrease in pay after implementation of the new wage board and law enforcers in Chittagong, Dhaka and Narayanganj on Sunday left four persons dead and at least 185 injured, including 50 policemen.
During the clashes, police fired around 600 rounds of rubber bullet, lobbed 150 teargas canisters and charged batons to disperse the agitating workers who retaliated with brickbats, stones and sticks.
At least five vehicles were burned down and 90 others vandalised while the demonstrators ransacked 11 garments and different other factories and 20 roadside buildings. Traffic movement on Chittagong Airport Road and Dhaka Airport Road and Dhaka-Sylhet Highway remained halted for hours causing severe traffic congestion and sufferings to people.
The clashes forced closure of the entire Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) in the morning. The production at three garment units in Dhaka and another in Narayanganj were also suspended.
The law-enforcers arrested at least 50 people, including 30 in Chittagong, reports our staff correspondent in the port city.
Four people, including a rickshaw puller, were killed during a clash between police and the apparel workers at the CEPZ in the port city of Chittagong where at least 60 other people, including 25 policemen and three journalists, were injured.
Of them, eight persons were bullet-injured. Ten of the injured were admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Jerusalem - Israeli police have arrested hundreds of Palestinian children

11 Dec 2010 - In the past year, criminal investigations have been opened against more than 1,200 Palestinian minors in Jerusalem suspected of hurling rocks at Israeli soldiers or Jewish settlers, according to police statistics gathered by the Association of Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI). That was nearly twice the number of children arrested last year in the much larger Palestinian territory of the West Bank.
Most of the arrests have occurred in the Silwan district, close to Jerusalem's Old City, where 350 extremist Jewish settlers have set up heavily guarded illegal enclaves among 50,000 Palestinian residents.
Late last month, in a sign of growing anger at the arrests, a large crowd in Silwan was reported to have prevented police from arresting Adam Rishek, a seven-year-old boy accused of stone-throwing. His parents later filed a complaint claiming he had been beaten by the officers.
Tensions between residents and settlers have been rising steadily since the Jerusalem municipality unveiled a plan in February to demolish dozens of Palestinian homes in the Bustan neighbourhood to expand a Bible-themed archeological park run by Elad, a settler organisation.

Services from Athens to Halkida have been interrupted as persons unknown have cut the cables.

9 December2010 - A 44 year old ex-owner of a marble-cutting business drowning in debt, found a way out through armed robbery of banks in Athens and the periphery.
Over the last 20 months with the aid of an air gun he carried out on his own 32 bank robberies (27 in Attica, 4 in Loutraki and 1 in Sparta).
The 44 year old was arrested in Salamina shortly after a bank robbery he had carried out there.
On investigation it was revealed that he was a former owner of a marble-cutting business that went bust, leaving him in serious debt.

Santiago, Chile - Relatives of the prisoners killed at San Miguel prison attack authorities giving list of victims

Relatives of the 81 prisoners killed by a fire today at the San Miguel Chilean prison as a result of a riot attacked the authorities responsible for disseminating the list of victims.
Family members threw bottles and stones at officers outside the jail, according to the account given by witnesses to the Chilean media. "We are\living in chaos," said a journalist from Radio Bio Bio on the scene.
The police had to intervene to stop the attacks, he added.
One of the most affected was the mayor (Governor) metropolitan Fernando Echeverria, whom the family insulted and threw eggs and other projectiles.

8 Dec 2010 - Fire engulfed a prison in the Chilean capital early on Wednesday, killing 81 [now 83] prisoners and critically injuring 14 others, prison officials said, in the worst-ever accident in the country's jail system.
Officials said the fire was triggered during an early-morning fight between prisoners [it has since been said that there is no evidence of this] in one of the crowded prison's five towers. Television footage showed part of the San Miguel prison in flames, black smoke billowing from the building.
Frantic relatives of the prisoners flooded to the jail's walls, screaming and imploring police to let them in to rescue their loved ones. Some threw rocks at police inside the prison perimeter in frustration.
"There are 81 dead, and we hope that figure won't rise," said Luis Masferrer, director of the national prison system. "This reflects the precarious state of Chile's prison system, which we have been denouncing and working to rectify since we took over (in March)."
"Overcrowding is a factor that will have to be analyzed in determining the causes of this terrible incident," he added.
Justice Minister Felipe Bulnes said the prison housed 1,960 inmates, nearly twice the 1,100 inmate capacity.
Radio station Bio Bio reported that around 200 prisoners had to be evacuated into a jail yard due to the fire.

Silven, Bulgaria - Pupils' protest turns into riot

8 December 2010 - Sliven. More than 500 pupils have gathered outside the building of the local government in the southern town of Sliven to hold a protest and insist on a longer Christmas holiday, FOCUS – Sliven Radio reports.

However, the protest turned into a riot, with the pupils hurling eggs, plastic containers and smoke bombs at the building of the municipality. The police detained the pupils who were throwing the smoke bombs. Some of the participants in the protests dissociated themselves from their riotous peers and said the violent behavior had not been initially planned.

The pupils said that they would not go to school on January 3, when their Christmas holiday is supposed to be over.

Ancash, Peru - One dead and eight wounded by police during protest against Centaur Mining permit

6 Dec. 2010 - One dead and eight wounded was the toll of the conflict between people of the Comune of Recuay and the National Police in Ancash. The victim was identified as Muñante Cadillo Willy Vergara (33), who died in hospital in Huaraz after receiving a gunshot wound.
The incident occurred this morning as part of a 24-hour pre-emptive strike to protest the mining concession granted to the Centaur company.
Farmers from the villages of Catac, San Miguel and Virgen del Rosario covered 167 kilometres to refuse to grant over 800 hectares of land in the community of Huambo.
The move caused several vehicles to be stranded on both sides of the road, so that the police used force to unblock the road, resulting in a violent confrontation. The villagers blame this situation on the Regional Office of Energy and Mines' permit to Centaur Mining, which they said will pollute Lake Conococha, considered a source of life.

6 Dec 2010 - On the second anniversary of the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos there were demonstrations in 17 cities of Greece. In Athens, two events took place: the first in the morning, called by students and teachers, the principal in the afternoon with a greater presence of anarchists, anti-authoritarian and leftist movements.
During the first march, students greeted the police throwing oranges, previously, in cities and suburbs, spontaneous demonstrations of high school students marched through the streets and in the area of Aigaleo, a hundred of them collided with the police after they entered the local police station.
Before the main march began, the fighting had already begun, triggered by the ban to start the event and provocations of the police in the university area where the participants were gathering.
The ban on demonstrating and the charges against the first clustered in the street, failed to block the various groups that were gathered beyond the police lines.
Thousands of people then came together, without permission, in the streets of Athens and the deployment of riot cops, 3000 agents, attacked at several points surrounding the blocks of protesters who responded with rocks, sticks, cans of paint and some petrol bombs (mainly in clashes outside Parliament).
The riot cops first responded with tear gas, then with stun grenades.
All night the fighting continued in the district of Exarchia, where Alexis was killed. Still charges, tear gas, and attacks against police barricades, many protesters held, some wounded among the police.
It seems that the cops have also destroyed the marble plaque placed by demonstrators in memory of Alexis.
For now, according to the regime media, it seems there are 84 held among the demonstrators.

Albania - German woman stopped trying to cross Greek border with revolvers

A 43-year-old German woman was being questioned by Albanian police yesterday after trying to cross into Greece late on Sunday with four revolvers strapped to different parts of her body. The woman was stopped near the town of Saranda (Aghioi Saranta in Greek). She did not have a license for any of the weapons.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 31, were under surveillance for more than a month but police resorted to dragnet arrests Saturday after two suspects were caught leaving an Athens hideout with backpacks of explosives, hand grenades and guns."The assumption was that they were preparing an attack," said a police official requesting anonymity. The official refused to elaborate but the private Mega television network reported that the terror suspects were eyeing a police or judicial target.
At least 14 house raids waged across the country have so far produced a grab-bag of weapons and gear, ranging from safe action pistols and submachine guns to flak jackets, memory sticks and wigs. While much of the police operation – still ongoing – has focused on the greater Athens area, counter-terrorism officials have also fanned out across the country raiding an apartment in Agrinio, central Greece, and arresting a nutritionist on the island of Crete.
All six terror suspects, including the 26-year-old female accomplice, have denied the charges levied against them; they say their rights had been violated and that authorities had refused to disclose details of the case against them. They face an investigating magistrate on Monday.

Jayapura. December 3 2010 - Hundreds of inmates at the Abepura Penitentiary in Papua rioted on Friday to protest over the shooting of a fellow prisoner who escaped and was killed in a raid the same day.
The prisoners shattered windows and destroyed fixtures like chairs and tables after jail officials refused to identify the officer who shot Hiron Wetipo, who had fled with five other inmates early on Friday.
Dozens of officers from the National Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) rushed to the scene to restore order, according to Nazaruddin Bunas, head of the Justice Ministry’s Papua office.
Additional help was sought from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), he said.
Nazaruddin said Buchtar Tabuni, a convicted separatist rebel and the riot leader, had demanded that authorities name Hiron’s shooter. “They didn’t give in to his demand, so the riot broke out,” he said.
Adj. Sr. Comr. Imam Setiawan, chief of the Jayapura Police, said Hiron and his group had gone into hiding in Tanah Hitam, Abepura subdistrict.
They were found by a joint police and military team looking for alleged separatists who launched a series of attacks along Jalan Raya Abepura on Sunday.

Dec 5 2010 - Embedded within Indonesia’s constitution are the following two lines: “all persons have the right to worship according to their own religion or belief” and “the nation is based upon belief in one supreme God.”
Placed side by side, it’s almost as if those two lines take on a new meaning. Feel free to worship however you choose, but make sure you choose to worship.
However one interprets it, there is no question that inter-religious conflict is on the rise in Indonesia.
Recent confrontations over faith have been allowed to turn the ideal of tolerance on its head with violent and ugly results.
And while finding common religious ground among those of different faiths has always been a delicate dance, it seems there are some people who are interested in changing the tune entirely. In greater numbers than ever before, they are standing up and doing the unthinkable: they are proclaiming that they no longer have any religious faith at all.
They are members of a small community of non-believers, otherwise known as atheists, and it seems that many of them are no longer content being silent.
More and more Indonesian non-believers are taking a stance against what they perceive is an archaic and repressive system.

Argentina - An anarchist brigade? Doubts raised by comrades of Culmine

Culmine willingly publishes and translates communiques relative to anarchist direct action undertaken anywhere in the world. We remember with pleasure that Severino Di Giovanni had a regular column like this - precisely in Culmine - called "Face to face with the enemy."
With the changing times, many claims are made directly on the Internet and in countries where there is no strict control of the network connections (e.g. fascist Italy) there are no great risks to those who send clandestine communiques. Unfortunately, this phenomenon increases the risk of false press releases or actual provocations. Recently we have had to deal with examples from Chile and Mexico.
More recently there is the case of an Argentinian brigade claiming actions of a certain weight, it is almost always of attacks, robberies, shootings. All actions that could have the approval of real rebels, provided they are truthful.
We of Culmine, in the light of recent events, have begun to have doubts and we need some confirmation.
But let's step back, re-reading some of the claims signed by the brigade, we read: "We are mainly anarchists" meaning they are not all anarchists, "we collaborate with a group of classist comrades who have decided to unite their destiny with our true antisystem fighting against union bureaucracy" which concerns us little, since we are not classist and that we are not fighting at all against the union bureaucracy.
Concerning an arsonist attack against buses, in a wage dispute, it was written "may no exploiter remain unpunished, nor any bureaucrat without warning from the moment their actions are observed by the proletarian working mass" ... but what proletarian working mass? Not even the 70s Italianist workerists expressed themselves in this way!
Another report on the theft of weapons from a barracks, concluded with the appeal "arms for the people." Again, hyper-populist language!
About the explosive attack of Cipolletti, which caused the death of a garbage collector, the brigade in question only talked of the death after being urged by the Células Revolucionarias. Here's the question and answer: c.r.: "it seems important that they give their views on recent events in Patagonia Argentina, where we sincerely believe a person who died was not the objective of this action. " Brigade: "unfortunately it was not like the cell of the area is making a self-criticism for this and will plan better for future attacks."

The statement twice uses the term "the comrades withdrew with order", unusual language for anarchist action group. These are our concerns. We do not feel like adding more. We are always on the side of those attacking the system, but we want to understand who we are dealing with. Actions do not speak for themselves, two cops killed by other cops (real or potential) do not interest us. We do not know what to do with the proletarian masses in arms!

Jamgara, Ashulia, Bangladesh - Garment workers rebel against sudden closure of Universe Knitwear Factory

5 December 2010n - At least 10 people, including two policemen, were injured in a clash between law enforcers and garment workers over the sudden closure of a factory at Jamgara in Ashulia yesterday.
Sources said nearly 1,700 workers of Universe Knitwear Factory reached their workplace in the morning to find that the unit has been shut down. No prior notice was served.
Incensed at the incident, the workers gathered at Jamgara Government Primary School compound and started chanting slogans against the authority. At one stage they gathered by the Dhaka-Tangail highway in a bid to block it.
The clash ensued when the agitating workers tried to put a barricade on the highway around 9:30am, said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station.
The workers also started throwing brickbats at the law enforcers, to which the police retaliated with tear gas shells and rubber bullets, added the OC. The workers were dispersed around 10:00am.
Sub-inspector Shahen Shah Parvez said “I with a team of six police personnel reached the spot. The workers hurled brickbats at us leaving one of my colleagues and myself injured.”
The SI added they took shelter behind a shop and on information another team rescued them.
At least eight factory workers sustained injuries during the clash, said locals.
Managing Director of the factory Hossain Shah Zaved, however, claimed the factory management was compelled to shut down the factory temporarily fearing more unrest.
The workers had been agitating since Wednesday demanding almost double the rate per piece for production of sweater. Zaved termed the demand unusual.
The factory will resume production once normalcy returns, he said, adding a negotiation between the workers and the management was going on to resolve the crisis.
Police arrested three factory workers at noon in this connection.
Meanwhile, around 3000 workers of Palmal Sweater Ltd abstained from work at its factory at Ashulia from 11:00am demanding pay hike.
SI Parvez said police personnel were deployed in and around the factory to avert any breach of peace.
One of the directors of the factory said they would sit with the workers today to settle the matter.
He added the workers left the factory in the afternoon.

A LETTER FROM THE LAWYER OF ONE OF THE ARRESTED

What certainty until now has been dislocated is the procedural right of the detainees and their possibility of communication with relatives and lawyers. The absolute prohibition of elementary rights while its been almost 24 hours since their arrest as well as the refusal to confirm the names of the arrested touches the limits of snatching. The scorn is completed with the usual method of selected leaks and the communication manipulation of common opinion.
And if these happen with the cover of the District Attorney's office the coincidence of repression mechanisms not in protection, but in the catalysis of the legal and constitutional order is confirmed.

Summarising all we heard from the mainstream media and journalists basically the voice of the anti terrorist police. 2 houses (a garage in Nea Smirni and an apartment in K. Grenades were found, 50 kilos of explosive materials anfo and a small quantity of TNT. As for the arrested, it's four people, two on Themistokleous Street in Exarhia, Athens and the other 2 in Nea Smirni that they say had weapons on them as well. The anti terrorist is leaking according to its spokespersons that there are 10 more people prosecuted while they are searching 15 points in Attica. As for Piraeus 2 young individuals of about 23 years, while they are openly saying that they have arrested an individual with a 600000 euro price on his head by the State wanted for the “robbers in black”.
The ballistic report has still not finished while they vaguely connect that they have in their hands members of two organisations, Revolutionary Sect and Conspiracy of Cells of Fire. Definitely all that we hear is the voice of the State that with its mechanisms and its spokespersons will take the case communicatively where they want it to.

Various mainstream media report that police are raiding numerous houses throughout Athens and that weaponry has been found. Arrests have been made in different parts of the city. Updates once it is possible to make out what is going on.
ATHENS, Greece – An official says counterterrorism police have raided a hideout outside Athens and confiscated weapons and arrested several people.
Greek TV reported that four people were taken into custody, but the police spokesman who confirmed the raid would not say how many have been arrested. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in compliance with police rules.
The official says the hideout is located southeast of Athens in the suburb of Nea Smyrni.

Rapa Nui - Chilean police brutes use rubber bullets and teargas against islanders demanding the return of ancestral land

Witnesses say police fired pellets as they tried to evict several indigenous inhabitants from buildings they occupied earlier this year.
The Rapa Nui group say the buildings were illegally taken from their ancestors several generations ago.
Easter Island, which was annexed by Chile in 1888, is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Chilean security forces began their operation in the early hours of the morning, says reports.
When the group refused to leave and others gathered at the scene, they opened fire with pellet guns.
Officials said 17 police officers and eight civilians had been injured. But the Rapa Nui put the number of injured locals at 19, and denied that any police had been hurt.
A statement on the Save Rapa Nui website said several people had been shot at close range. It said police had used rubber bullets and tear gas.
"They injured at least 23 of our brothers and sisters, three of them seriously," Edi Tuki, a relative of one of those injured, told the Efe news agency.
"One was shot in the eye with a buckshot pellet from just a metre away."'Shooting to kill'
Maka Atan, a Rapa Nui lawyer, told the Associated Press police had been "shooting to kill". He said he was shot in the back by pellets.
"It seems like this is going to end with them killing the Rapa Nui," he said.
Rapa Nui is the official name for the remote Easter Island, which lies more than 3,200 km (2,000 miles) off the west coast of Chile.

The indigenous Rapa Nui people have been protesting for the past three months about what say are plans to develop the island, as immigration and tourism increase.
They are demanding the return of ancestral land they say was unlawfully seized from their grandparents.

Lagos, Nigeria - tanker drivers halt supply of petrol in protest at maltreatment and killing by military

30 Nov. 2010 - “We ordered our members to stop loading petrol from the depots since yesterday and it will be like that for the next six days,” Tokunbo Korodo, a union leader with the blue-collar National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, told AFP.

He said the seven-day strike, which has led to long queues of motorists at petrol stations in Lagos and other parts of the country, was called at the expiration of an ultimatum asking government to look into grievances raised by the union.

“We have had three unpleasant cases of maltreatment and harassment of our member by soldiers in the past few weeks. In Jos, for instance, a driver was shot dead by an army officer who also impounded his truck,” he said.

He claimed that another driver “was beaten mercilessly” by a soldier who also seized his vehicle in the city of Ibadan town near Lagos, while in the oil hub of Port Harcourt a driver was “malhandled by a security agent because of a minor traffic offence.”

“The strike becomes necessary as the last resort because series of complaints we filed with relevant authorities for intervention on the matter have fallen on deaf ears,” truck drivers’ leader Dayyabu Gargai told AFP in the northern city of Kano.

Korodo said the strike will be suspended only if the government compensates the family of the shot driver and recover the two trucks seized by the soldiers.

A meeting was due to take place between union leaders and the labour minister on Tuesday.

In Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation with 159 million people and the world’s eight largest oil exporter, petroleum products are mostly delivered by truck drivers.

In August, the drivers suspended fuel distribution to the capital Abuja in protest at the state of the country’s roads.

Fifteen police officers have been injured in London’s first “town hall riot” since the scale of spending cuts was unveiled last month.

About 100 protesters stormed Lewisham’s Catford headquarters as councillors prepared to vote on an £18 million package of savings. - Local officers policing an earlier peaceful demonstration were overwhelmed and had to call in riot police from the Met’s Territorial Support Group as well as mounted police and dog handlers. - As police tried to clear the town hall lobby last night, the glass doors to the building were smashed and smoke bombs let off. At one stage a demonstrator was hanging from the balcony in the council chamber and at the end of the meeting councillors were given a police escort to their cars. Three men were arrested for violent disorder, trespass and the possession of an offensive weapon and a 31-year-old woman was held for aggravated trespass.The Met said 15 officers were treated for minor injuries, with two going to hospital for treatment to a broken finger and smoke inhalation.
The trouble flared after the initial demonstration over student fees and cuts in council services was hijacked by a larger group of protesters.Campaigner Patricia Richardson, who went to the meeting to ask questions about threatened library cuts, said: “Three members of the public were causing mayhem in the council chamber and one was hanging from the balcony. We were told this could endanger us and we should leave. It was quite worrying when several police officers arrived with their riot shields. There was chaos.“Back in the lobby there was a smashed window at the entrance and about 20 police officers defending it. There were mounted police outside and the South Circular was blocked with police vehicles. It was mayhem — and no one seemed to be in charge.”

“People were angry that they couldn’t get in, especially as it was so cold. More people managed to get in by overwhelming the police after the initial 40 had gone in.”

The meeting eventually went ahead and the cuts were passed by 36 Labour councillors voting in favour, with opposition from three Conservative and Green councillors, and 11 Liberal Democrats abstaining.
