ats, January 12, 2011 - The night between Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12, the Tunisian Embassy in Berne was object of an attempted criminal assault. Several attempts to light a fire were carried out by unknown persons shortly after half past midnight. The fire did not, however, catch and the damage is minimal, the cantonal police said.
The Embassy of Tunisia is located in the diplomatic district of Berne, in Kirchenfeld. An investigation has been begun to find the reasons and responsibility for the violence. The police are also looking for witnesses, says a statement Wednesday morning.
The attack occurred while the riots were over 50 killed in Tunisia in recent days, according to unions in Tunisia.

Poverty has been growing in North Africa since the beginning of the year. The price of food staples is soaring, there is less and less work, further reducing the pitiful spectrum of everyone’s means of survival. They are bringing out the old trick of the "crisis", making us believe that misery and revolt are new phenomena produced by it, while they are as old as money and authority. It only took a few sparks in Tunisia to set fire to the powderkeg of an already explosive situation, right to Algeria.
Cops attacked, government buildings, schools, customs, warehouses, police stations, car dealerships, banks and businesses targeted, coordinated roadblocks. Contrary to what power and journalistcops are saying, these riots are not limited to a few imaginary categories ("young", "graduates", "unemployed", "extremist") but are expressed widely, and their targets are
clear.
Opposite, the state's response is equally clear: in Tunisia, the cops respond to blocks by sniper fire, leaving dozens dead. In Algeria too, thousands of arrests, torture, detentions and killings, while the convictions have started and will continue. As always, as everywhere, the social war is raging, urging everyone to choose sides.
Already democratic or religious scavengers are rushing to recuperate these rebellions for political purposes, calling for reform or regime change, to divert this anger expressed in deed against any form of regime or government. They are already preparing the afterwards, wanting to replace the control of the dictatorship by democratic control, in other words, develop power to make it acceptable.
We who live in democracy, we can say that even if the daily living conditions are less harsh than under a dictatorship, democratic freedoms have never made us free. The freedom that we desire, that, is total and unconditional. Therefore this insurgent breeze, such as in Greece since December 2008 or in France in November 2005, warms our hearts. That's why we want to blow on the embers, and the spread the revolt.
Here, everywhere, now, all the time.
The revolution must come from the slums, because only bullets and blows come from above.

10.01.2011, CHINY – A Izel, a wood workplace was put on fire around 3h30 in the night. The big fire needed the intervention of firemen from five different areas. The workplace belonged to the association La Renardière, which through labor reintegrates people who have been condemned by Justice to forced labor or ex-prisoners. The damage to the work place is very serious. The place is literally burned down.

Police said they arrested a suspect from the region.

During the night, a fire erupted in one of the three places of the car dealership Ital Motors, which is a commercial distributer of Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Toyota and Nissan. Firemen say the fire started from the side of the work place and then spread to the showroom. A part from the buildings which are destroyed or heavily damaged, between 130 and 150 cars (new cars, cars from clients for maintenance and even some oldtimers) have been consumed by flames. The fire caused thousands and thousands of euros of damage; the people working there are currently on “technical unemployment”.
Currently, the site is blocked off by the police, who is conducting a serious investigation.

Starting off from the Canebiere, the crowd calmy reached the Consulate General of Tunisia late afternoon, under the protection of the riot police, chanting "Ben Ali, get lost", "Ben Ali murderer, Sarkozy accomplice" and waving placards denouncing" 60 dead in four days" and photos of the presumed victims covered with blood.
"We are surprised to see Tunisians demonstrating, they are usually the ones who are terrified. There they are out, they are no longer afraid, something has changed, " said Yahia Bounouar, Algerian opposer and spokesman of the "Solidarity Maghreb" group.

TUNISIA AND ALGERIA... NO EXCUSES FOR OUR LACK OF SUPPORT!!

Algeria and Tunisia have been going through an insurrection of epic dimensions for more than one week due to the worsening of the economical situation and its impact on the lives of millions of people from the lower social strata. In Tunisia the immolation of a fruit vendor in the city of Sidi Bouzid (he literally set himself on fire) was the spark that ignited a whole wave of fresh demos, rioting and brutal police repression with apparently more than 20 people murdered by the bastards in uniform. The rising in the prices of food and other basic goods as well as lack of freedom and rampant unemployment have also caused the riots to expand to the neighbouring country of Algeria.
What really surprises me is that none or at least very few fellow anarchist bloggers (at least among those I check nearly in a daily basis) seem to have bothered in posting something about events of such a magnitude. Neither any action has been planned or carried out in support of the workers, youth and common people bravely fighting their own exploiters and states in the streets of Algiers, Sidi Bouzid, Tunis, and others...
What is going on here?... could it be that the reputation of these 2 countries as "Islamic fundamentalist" dens make anything that may happen in them automatically uninteresting to our ethnocentric westernised mentalities?... can we see that Islamic fundamentalism may well be one of the many ways in which the local elites keep their people alienated and appeased to an extent and that this kind of control could possibly be starting to fade?. Are all Muslims "fundamentalists", "potential terrorists", could they also be rebellious and bear a wish for freedom and anarchy as apparently some grassroot Christians do?... is everything that happens in the territories within the sphere of influence of Islam inevitably biased by religious issues?...Have we already forgotten that the southern bereber region of Algeria (the Kabilia)saw during the whole year of 2001 one of the most inspiring examples of insurrection, anti-police feeling and anti-state self-organisation of the whole decade?...
As far as I can see we are talking about common people whose everyday struggle for sheer survival is meant to worsen to levels we could barely imagine in our "still not that bad" European continent... The fact that so many people literally run to any demonstration in support to the Palestinian struggle while no one seems to give a shit about the Algerian and Tunisian insurrections (comparable at all levels to the Greek riots after the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos and bearing so far a much higher death toll) strikes me as an utterly disgusting omission if not a pure and simple act of revolting hypocrisy.
Anarchist or not, those people are showing dignity, solidarity with each other, bravery and political consciousness and just for that we should support them in the same way we do with other comrades from different parts of the world. We should begin to build bridges and try to communicate (face to face if possible) with people from different cultural backgrounds and realities regardless the way in which they may be depicted or stereotyped by the mainstream media. Perhaps those about whom we know nothing today turn into the comrades of tomorrow.
And just to finish let me make a humble suggestion. A demo in support for those comrades in the Thessaloniki trial has been called for the 14 of January at 14:00 h in front of the Greek Embassy in London. For those who might not know this, the Algerian Embassy is also located in the Holland Park area (54, Holland Park), that is relatively close to the Greek one. Why not walking to this other embassy as well a little bit later with a banner or something?. Why not trying to increase the scope of our international solidarity by also rallying to the Tunisian embassy, located in Knightsbridge, close to the Albert Memorial (29 Princes Gate)?. Actually the 3 embassies are relatively close to each other so distance or transport is not a problem. See map here:

I am sure that the people literally fighting for their lives in Tunisia and Algeria would welcome any act of support, any action that could make them see that they are not alone and someone knows what is happening beyond the borders of their countries.
They deserve this and more... the same as we would if we found ourselves in a similar situation.

Algeria - 763 cops wounded, 1100 demonstrators arrested and three dead

10 January 2011 - Three deaths among the protesters, more than 800 wounded, including 763 policemen and over 1,100 arrests. Among the detained include many minors. That is the conclusion of the heavy and gruesome popular protest movement that is devastating, since 5 January, about twenty wilayas.
Anticipating a possible challenge to the official toll, Daho Ould Kablia, the Minister of Interior and Local Government, took the lead and already refuted any figures which might be provided by independent organizations.

Violent clashes continued between Saturday night and Sunday morning which resulted in more than 50 people dead in the cities of Thala (16), Kasserine (22), Meknassi (2), Feriana (1) and Reguab (8). Special forces and parallel militia (death squads) used live ammunition to overcome the protests that lasted until dawn of the morning today. Witnesses have described the scene as a "massacre of civilians". Special forces fired on funeral processions and prevented burial ceremonies. Kalima has learned that the police fired live ammunition at the funeral of a protester shot dead, forcing the abandonment of the last coffin on the road to the cemetery. Sources said the final death toll could not be determined. Nevertheless twenty-two people were reportedly killed by security forces during clashes yesterday in Kasserine. In the city Ennour in the city of Kasserine, five demonstrators were killed. These Bouzidi Raouf Salah al Fridh, Mounir Mbarki, and Abdelkader Mohammed Lassoudi Boulaaba.
Ezouhour in the city, three people died. The identity of only one of them was revealed, it is Salah El Boughanmi.
At least 16 people were killed and several others seriously injured by gunfire in clashes between demonstrators and security forces at Thala.
The same sources reported three dead bodies thrown into the river near the regional hospital of Kasserine.
In the city of Feriana, sources have reported a preliminary assessment of several injuries and the death of a 13 year old whose identity has not yet been revealed, twenty people were seriously injured transferred to hospital Habib Bourguiba, Sfax and to that of Kasserine.

Jan 5 2011 - AMMAN — Angry rioters went on the rampage Tuesday after the funeral of three men who were killed on Monday by unknown assailants because they had been chosen over others to work on a major project in the city, a security official said.
More than 500 people set fire to municipality and court buildings as well as to police vehicles, police posts, civilian cars, shops and a petrol station, police said.
“Police started a manhunt last night to search for weapons and arrest the killers as well as those who were behind the vandalism,” another security official told AFP.
“According to witnesses, one man was responsible for the killings while eight other men are suspected of creating a fight that led to the murder of the three.”

6 january 2011 – Rioting youths set fires, smashed streetlights and ransacked storefronts Thursday in the second day of rampages in the Algerian capital over rising food prices and chronic unemployment.
Helicopters circled, stores closed early and security officers blocked off streets in the tense working-class Algiers neighborhood of Bab el-Oued, near the city’s ancient Casbah.
Riots on Wednesday night in the neighborhood saw a police station, a Renault car dealership and other buildings set ablaze. Police with tear gas fired back at stone-throwing youths through the night.
Youths resumed their outbursts Thursday afternoon, smashing storefronts and streetlights in the area. Violence also erupted across town in the El Harrach neighborhood, where youths set tires on fire and threw stones at police. Riot police vans were parked in side streets.
Wednesday’s violence started after evening Muslim prayers. It came after price hikes for milk, sugar and flour in recent days, and amid simmering frustration that Algeria’s abundant gas-and-oil resources have not translated into broader prosperity.
Food price riots also hit Algeria’s Mediterranean city of Oran this week.
Algeria is still recovering from an insurgency that ravaged the country throughout the 1990s after the army canceled 1992 elections that fundamentalists were expected to win. Bab el-Oued is a former stronghold of that group, the now-banned Islamic Salvation Front, or FIS.
“They are right, these young people. They have no job, no housing, no visa (for other countries) and now not even bread or milk,” said Amara Ourab, a resident of the neighborhood in her 50s.

Sunday, January 02 2011 - Demonstrations continue following the death of protestor Jawaher Abu Rahma during a rally against the West Bank separation fence at Bilin. Eleven anarchists were arrested on Sunday morning in Herzliya on suspicion of protesting in front of the US ambassador's home and throwing tear gas canisters at his house.

The anarchists arrived at the US diplomat's home overnight carrying posters. Police officials said the suspects were also carrying Palestinian flags, tear gas canisters and spray.

According to online reports, the anarchists claimed they arrived at Ambassador James Cunningham's house in order to protest against US military aid to Israel, which they claimed was being put to use against Palestinians.

The anarchists reportedly chanted, "One, two, three, four stop the occupation, stop the war. Five, six, seven, eight end the funding, end the hate."

Occurring to suspicion, one of the anarchists threw hand grenades towards the house yard, and then the suspects fled the scene. The patrol police was called over, headed by Superintendent Avi Ohayon, and began combing the area in search of suspects.

All of the suspected were then found and brought in for questioning over at Glilot police station, headed by Chief Superintendent Nimrod Daniel. They were interrogated and later detained for further investigation.

Police officials said the 11 anarchists, one of which is a German citizen, are expected to be brought before the Magistrate's Court in Tel Aviv in order to extend their arrest.

Hundreds protested on Saturday in from of the Kirya Base (IDF headquarters) in Tel Aviv, following Abu Rahma's death. Eight protestors were arrested, including former Knesset member Mossi Raz (Meretz).

The protesters claimed that "even in the heart of Tel Aviv, the Israeli police treats citizens as enemies, crushing their freedom of expression and operating as storm troops of the right extremists."

Vancouver - New Year’s Prison Noise Demo

On December 31, 2010, we held a noise demonstration at the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre, in Maple Ridge. We acted as part of an anarchist international New Years Eve tradition against prisons and the world that needs them.
About 25 people arrived at the prison in a rented bus. We walked up close to the fences blaring music towards a temporary outdoor prison wing being used until they open a new wing of the prison. Screws (prison guards) lined up between us and the fences. In front, a banner read “Against All Prisons, For Freedom.” We shot off fireworks and flares, sparklers were raised with
helium balloons and we chanted “The passion for freedom is stronger than all prisons”, “Fuck prison”, and “No borders no nations, stop deportation”. We also shouted “Happy New Year!” to the prisoners.
Prisoners shouted and cheered from both the temporary wing and the prison building. We saw silhouettes of prisoners banging on the windows and a couple prisoners were actually able to come outside and view us from behind the fence in the temporary wing.
A short statement was read through a microphone:

“We are here today to express solidarity with the prisoners inside. To tell you that you are not alone that those of us in the outer walls are saying fuck prisons, down with every prison wall. We want you to know that while everyone else tonight is celebrating another year in the prison world, we are here to celebrate a future without prisons. A world where we don’t rely on
the pigs or institutions to solve our problems for us. A world where we are truly responsible to each other, where we no longer have to live in fear of the punishment distributed by the real thieves, gangsters, and murderers!
Fuck the system! Fuck the screws! Fuck Canada!

While leaving our vehicle was stopped by the 6 police cars. No one was identified. The driver was directed to drive us back directly to East Vancouver cutting short our plans to go to other prisons.
Many of us were inspired by the shouts from the prisoners. Prison walls are supposed to impose isolation. Instead, the meaning of those walls was subverted, they became a meeting place and a vehicle of communication.
Today we had further cause for celebration, we just learned that on December 30th, three prisoners escaped while on a prison slave crew near a large park in Maple Ridge. According to corporate news the (ex) prisoners were serving 9-10 month sentences. If you see them be sure to buy them a drink!
As long as prisons exist they are a shadow that hangs over us all and no one is free.

Portugal - Attacks on highway toll-gate cabin

We are spread two pieces of news from Portugal. Two attacks, the first an incendiary attack and the second with shots of a firearm against toll stations.

These blood-letting and monitoring tools have been introduced only recently, the Portuguese and Autovie are triggering heated protests that are also realized with this kind of sabotage.

26 December, Neiva, Viana do Castelo (Portugal) – A28 highway: toll-gate cabin burnt down

The A28 highway toll-gate cabin in Neiva was vandalized (burnt down) this Saturday at dawn, by placing tires on fire next to the cabin. The concessionary company Litoral Norte refused to answer if the fire had interferred with the electrical system.

The introduction of toll-gates (recently built) on this and other highways has been the reason for protests; many people are against the collecting of money on the highways, some of them were free, a situation that changed with the new economic measures.

28 December, Esposende (Portugal) – toll-gate cabin is attacked with gun shots on A28 highway

The companies Litoral Norte and ViaLivre publicly complained about acts of vandalism against the toll-gate cabins in A28. This time, “two individuals with their faces covered attacked a cabin with gun shots” at dawn.

The police are investigating.

Belfort, France: two fixed radar cameras put out of use

January 2, 2011 - The two fixed speed cameras installed on the A36 in Belfort were damaged during the night of Saint-Sylvestre. The first is installed at the level of Danjoutin and the second at that of Belfort.

For the first, the method of destruction is a classic since it was destroyed by a fire started with tires. In contrast the method of the second is unusual. Indeed, to make the radar inoperative, acid was poured on the power electronic device.

Bolivia - Protests all over the country in response to rocketing price of fuel

There have been protests across Bolivia after the price of fuel rocketed in the South American country. Last weekend, the Government announced it could no longer afford to subsidise fuel prices, which had been frozen for six years. The announcement led to a 73% hike in petrol prices and a leap of 83% in diesel prices. As well as hitting transport, the increase has also led to a jump in food prices.

Protests in the capital La Paz began peacefully but there were clashes with police when demonstrators tried to enter the main plaza where the government palace is located. Police used tear gas to disperse the protesters, who hurled stones at officers and government buildings.

Many of the protests turned violent In nearby El Alto, demonstrators set fire to a car and toll booths, while there were also protests in the cities of Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Potosi and Oruro. The protests have left a total of 15 police officers injured, two of them seriously. The move has been the most unpopular decision taken during the five-year reign of president Evo Morales. His government has announced measures aimed at offsetting the effects of the fuel rise, including 20% salary rises for public workers and assistance to rice, corn and wheat farmers. However, demonstrators say the moves are not enough and are demanding fuel prices return to their former levels.

Buenos Aires - Armed Group Frees 11 Prisoners from Argentine Police Station

Dec 31 2010 - BUENOS AIRES – Eight armed people on Monday attacked a police station on the outskirts of the Argentine capital and freed 11 prisoners, though authorities later recaptured one of the escapees.

“It was a highly audacious act,” said Juan Carlos Paggi, the police chief in the province of Buenos Aires, confirming to radio stations the attack on a police station in the town of Glew, 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the city of Buenos Aires.

Two of the freed prisoners had been arrested for armed robbery and it is presumed that they were busted loose by their companions, one of whom apparently was wounded during the attack.

The Buenos Aires metropolitan area, where it is estimated that some 10 million people live, one quarter of the Argentine population, has the highest crime rates in the country. EFE

Berlin - Suspected anarchists attack Berlin prison with fireworks

Jan 2, 2011 - Berlin – A group of suspected anarchists attacked a Berlin prison and a police station with fireworks, stones and paintbombs, police revealed Sunday – two days after the incidents.
Neighbours observed 15 to 20 men in ski masks attacking the Pankow women’s prison on Friday night, drawing graffiti on the front wall, exploding fireworks, kicking the main door and breaking a window.
Later on New Year’s Eve, eight masked men threw cobblestones, paint bombs and two petrol bombs at a police station in central Berlin. The flames were quickly extinguished by police officers. Fires were also set in nearby streets.
Police said they were checking a claim of responsibility on an anarchist website and assumed the attacks had a political motive.
Europe’s anarchist movement has become more militant in recent years. Bomb attacks on embassies in Rome in December were blamed on an Italian anarchist group, while letter bombs mailed to Berlin and other capitals earlier in the year were blamed on Greek anarchists.

One more year, we found ourselves next to imprisoned comrades and all those detained who do not bent neither bow their head, who dared to resist and fight against the regime. Athens: more than 400 people gathered outside Koridallos prisons. One of the louder slogans was ‘Neither criminal neither political; set fire to all prisons.’

Thessaloniki: about 100 people gathered outside Diavata prisons. On their return, they stopped at the police headquarters of Thessaloniki (GADTH), where a comrade is detained after he was arrested during the invasion in the anarchist squat Nadir; he has made an appeal.
Heraklion, Crete: 30 comrades held a motorized march towards Alikarnassos prisons, making an intervention at the rear of the prisons with fireworks, etc.
Volos: at least 70 comrades chose to get as close as possible to the people behind the bars of the Greek republic. The detainees, who were in tension since early in the evening, cried out slogans and hit the cell bars as soon as comrades got there with slogans and fireworks. There was also a mini demonstration round the juvenile prison.
Grevena: about 70 people gathered outside the Feli prisons, where a live broadcast of solidarity was held.

London, UK, New Year's Eve Demonstration Outside Holloway Prison in Solidarity with the Yarl's Wood 3

02/01/2010 - On New Year's Eve, friends, family and supporters of the Yarl's Wood 3 came together outside Holloway Prison for a noisy demonstration of solidarity. Over 100 people showed that the struggle for freedom for these three brave women, and all those in detention, will continue in 2011.
In February 2010 prisoners at Yarl's Wood immigration prison organised a hunger strike. They demanded an end to indefinite and abusive imprisonment. Their courageous protest lasted five weeks, despite violent attacks by guards at the detention centre.
As retribution several people involved in the hunger strike were moved to prisons. Three of those targetted in this way are still behind bars: Denise McNeil, Sheree Wilson and Aminata Camara. They have been away from their families, friends and communities for far too long.
With whistles, pots and pans, flutes, drums, rattles, megaphones, and a soundsystem, the demonstration could be heard by those inside the prison. Chants of 'Free the Yarl's Wood 3', 'Hunger Strikers are Freedom Fighters', and 'An Injury to One is an Injury to All', and 'No One is Illegal'.
After gathering around the entrance to the prison with lots of banners, people moved around to the side entrance, within sight of people inside, who waved and shouted back. Cars and buses honked in support, and residents of the surrounding housing came and joined in.
Messages of support from organisations and individuals in Britain, and around the world were read out. Support has come from Ireland, the US, New Zealand, France, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and elsewhere. In Sweden, a giant banner was hung in central Malmo, calling for ' Asylum for all in 2011', to coincide with the New Year's Eve demonstration.
Their struggle was “for everyone in detention”. We need to support those who take action on the inside. When they use prison to try to silence resistance we will fight back.

Ford open prison was extensively torched by fire during a riot by inmates at New Year. The riot was caused by zealous prison guards who were trying to breathalyze prisoners. Prisoners are not supposed to celebrate like everyone else. – “Do as you are told, not as we do”. Burn all Prisons – Destroy the State.

The only information currently available is from corporate media sources.

It seems six accomodation blocks at an open prison have been destroyed after inmates went on the rampage and started fires – allegedly over attempts to breathalyse them.The riot, at HMP Ford near Arundel, West Sussex, began at around midnight.It involved around 40 prisoners wearing balaclavas to protect their identities who smashed windows and activated fire alarms.The inmates, led by men from B wing, set alight five blocks in the morning, with another three on fire by noon.

Staff were forced to retreat and specialist control and restraint teams and fire fighters were called in. The riot was triggered after some prisoners refused to be breathalysed for alcohol, according to Mark Freeman, deputy general secretary of the Prison Officers Association. Mr Freeman said a large amount of alcohol had been found in the jail and staff had been trying to get inmates to take a breath test for several days.

Reporters at the scene said plumes of smoke could be seen above the prison all morning. The fires had destroyed six accomodation blocks, a mail room, a gym, a snooker room and a pool room with 10 new tables, they said. The loss of the accomodation means about 160 inmates will have to be moved to other jails. A Prison Service spokesman said: ‘We can confirm that around 140 additional prison service staff have arrived at Ford to support the local staff in bringing the prison under full control’.”
