Athens, Greece - Attack on home of Citizens' Advocate

actforfreedomnow

The king is naked… behind the institutions, the laws, the uniforms, the condemnatory decisions, behind the policies and the symbols of the regime faces are hidden. Faces with names, addresses and roles that in the stratification of power each one of whom has a share and the weight of their position and choices.
Our position and choices have been clear for a while now. We declared, moreover, that we would come to your homes. Thus, in the early morning of Saturday 15/1 we visited Kalliopi Spanou in the complex of apartments where she lives in Halandri on Zaimi Street 38 and as a token of “appreciation” to her, we left an incendiary device made from 5 litres of petrol and 3 gas cannisters. We decided to place the device in the courtyard and not near a door or window in order to avoid injuring another tenant or even your own daughter. As for your “honourable” husband and his role we will talk about that in the future.
We see the concealment of this attack as part of the efforts of the enemy to strengthen the climate of safety and control.
Kalliopi Spanou is the successor of Giorgos Kaminis in the position of citizens’ advocate. This appointed and “independent” authority has as its mission the minimization of friction between the regime and society, and is nothing more than the oil in the cogwheels of the government machinery.
All well respected “ladies” and “gentlemen” should know that at the moment you build careers as miserable pillars and employees, the political court marshals are set up, our comrades are tortured, they are persecuted, imprisoned, friendly relations are criminalized and the seal of the antiterrorist provisions falls upon every part that resists and acts.
Know, also, that your overloaded social position will not be forgotten let alone forgiven… you will be accountable you scum and because in the days to come the helicopters cannot fit you all, the best thing you can do in order to save your dignity even at the last moment is to perform hara-kiri in Syntagma square [main square in athens, right in front of parliament]. We draw the dividing lines. We fight, we do not recede, receding means quitting. We speak we do not keep quiet, silence is compliance. We do not flinch, we transfer fear to the camp of the enemy and light the fuse of revenge.
Shame to the spectators, the submissive, to those that bow their head and turn the other cheek. We accept responsibility for our actions, we all know what’s going on and no one is unfortunate, the history of each one us is written and cannot be unwritten.
At this point we want to stress that the criticism between revolutionaries and the people that fight should be evolutionary and promote the struggle itself, otherwise it ends up being merely comments of a kind that conceal bickering and inaction.
We dedicate our attack to the jailed members of the R.O. Conspiracy of Cells of Fire H.Hajimihelakis, P.Argirou that are on trial as of Monday 17/1 in the political court martial of koridallos prisons, as well as P.Masouras, K.Karakatsani, G.Karagiannidis, A.Mitrousias, who deny the charges and are on trial for the same case.
We greet the call to a militant expedition of solidarity of the Warriors of Revolutionary Conscience.
Solidarity for us is the struggle itself.
SOLIDARITY TO ALL THE PRISONERS OF WAR
FREEDOM TO ALL OF US
we will be back…..

"to be at war is not a different way of managing society. It is, irreducibly and irreconcilably, ideas about happiness and its worlds. Power knows this, and so do we ... " Invisible Committee

In a couple of hours the trial of the Greek comrades will begin, some of them with enthralling courage have claimed militance in the anarcho-revolutionary group Conspiracy of Cells of Fire. Their commitment as militants of freedom with actions of radicalization for a better life, without structures, without stereotypes or any kind of power, the only way for anti-social construction. For all of us a fine example of permanent action for the revolutionary uprising. It is here and now that words and deeds become one. Far from theorising concepts of Revolution, it is concrete actions that show the fury of those of us who yearn to destroy the current state of affairs. Today more than ever we see ourselves in sincere need to create spaces, material and otherwise and self-organization to form a future of conscious individuality, to sow the anti-authoritarian ideas in every corner of the world, with the goal of a better life, away from domination and any form of exploitation.
The current society, founded as a forced association of individuals, will never make possible our dreams of autonomy and freedom. The political-social and economic reality of recent years shows that the modernist criminal system can no longer sustain itself, the spread of the uncontrollable revolutionary idea is putting in check "control and social peace." That 's why the State and power are using as a response their Machiavellian tool, prison. In these moments of physical confinement, my spirit leads me to shout louder than ever:
May solidarity destroy all walls!! Tear down the prison walls! Subvert any established and imposed moral, and social value!
Greek comrades: from hundreds of miles away I send a strong and fraternal embrace full of inherited love and rage.

İstanbul, Turkey - Solidarity Action with Conspiracy of Cells of Fire

325 nostate

January 19th, 2011 - “İstanbul, Turkey (16.01.2011) – In the night of 16th of January 2011 at 7 p.m. against the biggest one of the shopping centers in Istanbul, Cevahir AVM, there was an attack with fireworks. The 4 of the exploded 7 fireworks hit the entrance and the windows of shopping center. While fireworks begin to explode, there had been no injury except a little bit panic.
While the banks, shopping centers, fastfoods [outlets] and other part of the consuming culture reduce imagination and free-time to shit and debt, while our planet becomes unliveable because of the consumption and commodification, we see a little art-sabotage not inappropriate.
The actions that we took like this is for solidarity with our comrades who are now in hostages in Greek dungeons and with Conspiracy of Cells of Fire.
Insurrectionary greetings.”

Athens, Greece - Some information about start of trial of the comrades members of Conspiracy of Cells of Fire and those accused in the same case

actforfreedomnow

17 January - Early in the morning the atmosphere in Korydallos was asphyxiating .. police everywhere and very few comrades. Around 11 am people gathered on the pavement outside the prison/court to get in. They had to give their ID card and full personal information. The courtroom was full of plainclothes cops. A few people made it to get in. Then the court was stopped and it was stated that nobody would be allowed in without ID and the card would be kept for the duration of the trial. That is illegal since the police only have the right to keep your identity card if you are a witness, or expert witness (according to the procedure). Since, however, it is assumed that the case is not yet closed, they are trying to find more to culprits. Fortunately, the accused comrades refused to speak and left the courtroom..
SO the trial was adjourned again for the reasons mentioned above. After over an hour, it restarted to hear again the same demands as those made by the lawyers, but from the accused themselves:
1. NO personal data to be recorded from identity cards, which are not to be withheld at the entrance by the security cops.
2. Up until then there was absolutely nothing on record for obvious reasons. There is apparently no need for the proceedings to be recorded (to have the possibility of perverting what has been said for public opinion and those not present at the trial).
3. Demands that the plainclothes cops leave the courtroom and let the people outside occupy the seats, because outside the cops guarding the prison had closed the road, prohibiting not only entry to the prison, but also the approach road for the following obvious reasons "we have orders not to let anyone pass and even if we let them in, the court is full." Bullshit Indeed, after the first interruption, most plainclothes cops fucked off - one was almost attacked but they managed to conceal him. That had the effect of freeing around 40 places.
After we sent one of our lawyers to inform those at the entrance that there was room to go in, but anyway the scum did not let anyone pass. So 1 / 3 of the courtroom was empty and the other 1 / 3 was composed of cops (plainclothes or not). The comrade prisoners stated that if the demands were not accepted they would not participate in the trial. Of course the president of the court didn't give a shit, which angered many people and the imprisoned comrades left the court again to the accompaniment of slogans.
Finally, the culmination of the whole matter was this: The President ruled that despite the "generous" and "honest" efforts by the Court, there are not the logistics for the trial to be tape-recorded! Still, she still wanted to continue, of course. She also agreed that the registration of personal information of those present, such as the photocopying of identity documents, is illegal and banned, but the ID cards of those entering the courtroom would be held until they left the prison! Looking us straight in the face. On the other hand, we were "assured" all the same, that the list of records would be destroyed, while no written statement to that effect was produced ... (Why?) She said that the proceedings are public and open to everyone to attend WITHOUT EXCEPTION, provided the attendees did not exceed the number of seats (accentuating the "without exception", meaning of course that the public can also mean plainclothes cops!) Finally, the possibility of the "removal" of the case to the Court, was examined. It depends on whether it is possible for it to be fitted with the necessary logistics for recording (the latter will certainly be decided at the next hearing in the courtroom of Korydallos)
The accused comrades were well - as well as it is possible to be, namely, dynamic and determined.
Outraged by the developments they left the courtroom. When leaving, those present in the court shouted slogans such as "cops, judges SS” and “the passion for freedom is stronger than the prison”.
The trial will resume on Monday 24 / 1, 9.00 am
EVERYBODY THERE !!!!!

p.s.
As anarchists in solidarity we are proud of the dignified position of the accused comrades in this parody of a trial today.

Athens, Greece - Incendiary devices go off against Proton Bank, old PASOK premises and a construction company

from the greek media

17 January 2011 - An incendiary device went off outside a branch of Proton Bank in Vyronas, eastern Athens, in the early hours of Saturday, causing minor damage and no injuries. At about the same time, a similar device caused damage to an office formerly used by PASOK in Moschato, southern Athens. Police did not say if the three incidents were linked.

Thessaloniki 4 trial update day #1
by some attendants in solidarity
What follows is the first in a series of updates that will cover the Court of Appeals of our four comrades in Thessaloniki, day by day. Background information at http://www.salonikisolidarity.org.uk/
Friday 14 January 2011, 9am, Thessaloniki Courthouse.
The legal team of the defendants succeeded in its application to change one of the panel of three judges (a former state prosecutor) for another, less-biased one. Also, a fair number of the police witnesses (5-6 of the originally about 40 in number) asked to be excused because they knew nothing of the case.
The first prosecution witness was Police Officer Stamatis, the arresting officer of Simon Chapman. Simon’s lawyer, Christos Bakellas, set about demolishing the police witness testimony.
The next two prosecution witnesses (policemen) almost admitted the fact that they planted evidence against the arrested protesters. Neither police witness could say if forensic examination ever took place. These two officers were credible in that they didn’t know anything of our comrades’ arrests and could only say that they stuffed various molotovs and weapons in any available backpack to hand. Point being: any evidence found in a backpack is compromised.
The first day of the trial adjourned around 3.30pm Greek time (GMT+2).

Istanbul, Turkey - Turkish police on Sunday used water cannons and tear gas to disperse dozens of Kurdish youths

AFP

Turkish police on Sunday used water cannons and tear gas to disperse dozens of Kurdish youths hurling gas bombs and stones after a demonstration in central Istanbul.
The unrest erupted after about 2,000 people marched down İstiklal Avenue, Istanbul's main pedestrian area, to denounce the trial of some 150 people on charges of links to Kurdish Communities Union, or KCK, the alleged urban branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
..
As the march ended and the crowd began to disperse, some 200 youths — many with their faces wrapped in scarves — launched a hail of stones at nearby buses, despite fellow demonstrators' attempts to stop them.
The security forces responded with tear gas and water cannons, chasing the group into side streets. A Molotov cocktail hurled by protesters set ablaze a firefighting vehicle, which was badly damaged.
The trial, which is being heard by a local court in Diyarbakır, was postponed Friday until Tuesday. The case is against 152 suspects, including 12 mayors of several southeastern Anatolian cities, all elected from the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP, as well as many other local politicians.

Girona, Spain - Violent protests against action of the police

elpais

17 January 2011 - Sunday afternoon there was some calm in Salt (Girona). But with a difference: more police cars. The municipality, with 43% of immigration, from Friday have lived a wave of vandalism that has seen 12 vehicles burned (five cars and seven motorcycles) and nine charred containers. The mayor has called for calm and called for police reinforcement. The Police have arrested three people. Last March locals and immigrants faced by problems of living in one of the municipalities (31,000 inhabitants) with a higher rate of immigration.
In Salt, it all started on Friday with a concentration of between 40 and 50 people(mostly aged between 9 and 14 years), almost all immigrants, in solidarity with Mohamed Reda Lyamani, who remains hospitalized in critical condition for more than a week. He fell into an open courtyard from a fifth floor to escape the police, who stopped him while driving a stolen motorcycle. The teenager, aged 16, has numerous criminal precedents. "We have very much present the facts of Paris," said the mayor, who has said they will fight to prevent the same thing happening.
On Friday people began burning containers and early Sunday morning several cars were burnt in different streets of the city.

17.01.2011

Last night, at 2:00 am, a fire broke out of an apparently anarchist matrix at the entrance of the building that houses the Federal Criminal Court (TPF) in Bellinzona. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and there were no injuries.
Two women who worked on the third floor were able to leave the building unharmed, says a statement of the Ticino cantonal police.
The alleged perpetrators of the criminal act left written slogans of an anarchist character on the wall of the building. "Fire to the courts. Smash the state", according to a photograph published on the website of Swiss Radio (CSR).
The fire damaged the main entrance door and the surrounding area. The building also houses the Regional Directorate of Swisscom.

Athens, Greece - Neo-nazis and residents attack march against fence at border with Turkey

reuters

15 Jan 2011 - ATHENS (Reuters) - Far-right protesters threw stones at a pro-migrant march in Athens on Saturday before being dispersed by bursts of teargas, police said, in the latest sign of tension over the capital's growing immigrant population.
Over 1,000 members of anti-racism groups, leftists and immigrants were marching in central Athens to protest against a controversial plan to build a fence at the border with Turkey to stop illegal immigrants from entering Greece.
"Over 100 members of neo-Nazi groups and about 200 local residents attacked the leftists and other protesters with stones. The police used several rounds of teargas and flash grenades," a police official said.
A Reuters witness said police arrested at least one protester.

Tunisia - Barricades, citizens start to organise. 42 peple killed in prison fire. 1,000 prisoners released to avoid massacre

AP

16 January 2010 - TUNIS, Tunisia— Looting, deadly prison riots
and street chaos engulfed Tunisia on Saturday,
a day after mass protests forced its strongman
to flee. A new interim president was sworn in,
promising to create a unity government that
could include the long-ignored opposition.
It was the second change of power in this
North African nation in less than 24 hours.
Saturday night appeared calmer than the
previous night, which saw looters empty
shops and torch the capital's main train
station as well as some shops. As military
helicopters patrolled overhead, residents in
some neighborhoods armed themselves with
sticks and clubs, forming impromptu militias
to protect their homes.
The leadership changes then came at a
dizzying speed.
Ben Ali's longtime ally, Prime Minister
Mohammed Ghannouchi, stepped in briefly
with a vague assumption of power that left
open the possibility that Ben Ali could return. B
ut on Saturday, the head of the Constitutional
Council declared the president's departure
permanent and gave Fouad Mebazaa, leader of
the lower house of parliament, 60 days to
organize new elections.

Hours later, Mebazaa was sworn in.

In his first televised address, the interim
president asked the premier to form a
"national unity government in the country's
best interests" in which all political parties will
be consulted "without exception nor
exclusion."

On the streets, the unrest was frightening.

A fire Saturday at a prison in the
Mediterranean coastal resort of Monastir killed
42 people, coroner Tarek Mghirbi told The
Associated Press. The cause of the fire was Some rioters appeared to be targeting
businesses owned by members of Ben Ali's
family, which had financial interests in a wide
range of sectors, from banking to car
dealerships. In Tunis, a branch of the Zeitouna
bank founded by Ben Ali's son-in-law was
torched, as were vehicles made by Kia, Fiat
and Porsche — carmakers distributed in
Tunisia by members of the ruling family.

Citizens set up barricades
With many shops, markets and bakeries in the
capital shuttered Saturday, some residents
expressed growing worry about getting basic
goods, like bread.

Residents of some Tunis neighborhoods set
up barricades and organized overnight patrols
to deter rioters. In the tony El Menzah
neighborhood, dozens of men and boys
armed with baseball bats and clubs were
taking turns on patrol — just as a broadcast
on Tunisian television had urged citizens to
do.

Public television station TV7 — now known as
Tunisian National Television — broadcast
phone calls from residents on the capital's
outskirts, describing attacks by knife-wielding
assailants.

Rumors fed off the instability, and some
citizens speculated the marauding gangs were
made up of Ben Ali loyalists bent on sewing
chaos in the country.

The death toll mounted. At least 42 people
were killed Saturday in a prison fire in one
resort town and the director of another prison
in another tourist haven let 1,000 inmates flee
after soldiers shot five dead amid a rebellion.
Those deaths came on top of scores of others
after a month of protests in which police often
fired upon demonstrators.

In Mahdia, further down the coast, inmates set
fire to their mattresses in protest. Soldiers
opened fire, killing five inmates, top local
official said. The director of the prison then let
about 1,000 other inmates flee the prison to
avoid further bloodshed, the official said,
asking not to be identified because of security
concerns.

Greece - Open letter by Philip and Pepe Mayer about the sycophancies and the puplications by some parrots of the State about our sister.

actforfreedomnow!

15 January 2011
The big game that is being played on the back of our sister and our family.
With the trial of the defendants for participation in the organization “Conspiracy Cells of Fire” approaching and the explosion in the Administrative Court building remaining unanswered on the side of arrests, it was expected from the state to try to catch a "big fish" and if it cannot, it manufactures it, so that it recovers its lost prestige and demonstrates its strength.
Thus certain journalists, agents of authority, found the opprtunity, based on the coincidental synonymy of our mother with an alleged member of the RAF, Barbara Meyer, to set up a cinematographic history of conspiracy with alleged interconnections of international and domestic groups. They reached such a point of ridiculousness, that they re-published names of wanted members of the RAF from the '80s and other spicy sauces to satisfy the terrorized public.
Our mother was presented therefore as a wanted and disappearred terrorist, the moment where she lives in Greece together with us, her family.
Our father Wolfgang had a worse fate in their hands, after not only they changed his name, but they also presented him to have been killed in a shoot out with cops in Austria years ago! Very Shocking for a music-therapist that lives and works healthy in Germany…
Our sister, because it appears she had a drink with somebody from the 4 arrested that are accused for a incendiary attack in Thessaloniki, through these myths and her “terrorist” genealogical tree, was herself baptized as a member of a criminal organization and is called to testify!
Our sister, as we, is not a terrorist, but an anarchist, a choice heavy in a world of dominators.
We demand that this sordid game that is played on the backs of our sister and our family stops immediately and we warn all those participating that they will find us in front of them.
And let's not forget: The states are the only terrorists.

Tunisia: The property of the family of President Ben Ali attacked and looted

kalimadz

Protesters attacked and looted French retailers Carrefour and Casino, and which are associated with those close to power in Tunisia, today and yesterday according to information obtained by AFP. At Gafsa (south-west), the depot of a Carrefour store, on the ground floor of a seven-storey building was looted by protesters today as the store on the first floor was destroyed Wednesday, witnesses said.
The looting took place under the eyes of soldiers stationed in their armoured cars near bank branches, none of which were touched, the witnesses said.
In Nabeul, the northeast, a shop of the same name was completely destroyed and emptied by protesters, reported a news correspondent. In Gabes, south-east, another Carrefour store was looted, according to radio Shams FM. It belongs to one of the daughters of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
At Bizerte (north-east), a store of the Monoprix chain suffered the same fate Thursday, residents said. Near Lafayette area, near the centre of Tunis, demonstrators tried to march towards a Champion store but were dispersed by police, according to many witnesses.
A Ettadhamen, suburb near the north of Tunis, some protesters tried to approach the Géant hypermarket of the Casino chain, which is located a few miles further north and where there is also a Conforma store owned by Imed Trabelsi, a brother of the president's wife, Leila Ben Ali, has been a correspondent for AFP.
Asked if he wanted to tackle the hypermarket Géant because it's a French brand, a protester said "no, it is not French, it belongs to relatives of the president."

Athens, Greece - About the arrest of comrade Fei Mayer

from the greek streets

Saturday, January 15, 2011 - One day after the arrest of four comrades (update 470), the antiterrorist agency arrested the comrade Fei Mayer. She is accused for participation in a 'terrorist' [our commas-an] group (the name of the group has not yet been decided by the cops). Lawyers or information about what she is accused is considered luxury for people arrested in greece, so she doesn’t have any of these. The mass media come to fill the gap of the not-existing evidence, so they have started to transmit surreal scenarios about their parents being members of RAF and other armed groups in Germany. They also “informed” us that her father was killed during a guerrilla action in Germany! Of course, her father is still alive, maybe he is a bit more insecure after he was informed about his death.

The crime of Fei is solidarity and dignity.

Algeria unrest rooted in long-simmering resentment

magharebia

14.01.2011 - This month's protests in Algeria were some of the largest ever by the country's youth. In the wake of the events, observers told Magharebia that the underlying anger stems not only from economic factors but a deep-seated sense of neglect and exclusion among young people.
"These young people are not rebelling against the high price of sugar and oil, but against the misery of daily existence which has gone on for too long now, without the slightest glimmer of hope on the horizon," explained Baaziz, a singer, who broke his silence to express solidarity with the rioters.
The ambitions of young Algerians are modest, according to a 2009 Gallup poll. The Silatech-sponsored survey found that 40% dream of starting a family, a third of landing a good job and 35% dream of leading a balanced religious and spiritual life.
Although the unease felt by young Algerians can be seen in their desire to flee their country, a large part of the young people interviewed said they were "bound hand and foot", as the study put it, and unable to live the life of which they dreamed. Young Algerians complain in particular about the barriers which stand in their way. They do not feel "involved" in their country's plans for progress.
Algerians seem divided on the methods used by rioters to express their anger. Now that the ill-feeling has subsided to some extent, it is time to assess the damage. The destruction caused during the riots was, in the words of the interior minister, "immense". Young people attacked public and private property, including banks, schools, luxury shops, car dealerships and factories.
The violence has been widely viewed as an expression of young people's frustration and a result of the muzzling of dissenting voices and the ban on peaceful demonstrations.

Buenos Aires - Robbers snatch Argentine president’s travel cash

reuters

January 14, 2011 - BUENOS AIRES - Argentine thieves stole at least $68,000 that was meant to be used as spending money for officials during a trip by President Cristina Fernandez to the Middle East.
Local media said armed thieves mugged a presidential official who was walking in the street with the money in a backpack and forced him to hand over the bag before speeding off on a motorbike.
The official had been given the cash to take on a trip by Fernandez to Turkey, Qatar and Kuwait to pay the expenses of officials accompanying her.
“(The robbery) happened yesterday and it’s been reported to the police,” government spokesman Alfredo Scoccimarro said yesterday, shortly before Fernandez was due to leave.
The incident comes amid a surge in drive-by robberies in Argentina. In many cases, the thieves target people as they leave banks carrying large quantities of cash.

Saltillo, Mexico - arsonists are back

culmine

News from Rabia y Acción
14.01.2011 - A new attack was made in the night of January 12. After nearly three months of inactivity, arsonists in Saltillo, Coahuila state, made their appearance. The last attack was on 17 November 2010, when three vans were damaged in different parts of the centre of Saltillo.
This time, after midnight, in front of a house on Calle 971 Riachuelo, in the colony Praderas, a Chevrolet 79 was set on fire. The fire burnt out the vehicle, firefighters that arrived on the spot said the loss was total.
The second fire occurred around 01.30am, when an anonymous caller warned that a Cavalier was burning in the private street Tulipanes, in the Valle de las Flores colony. After the fire was extinguished, around 2.40am in the República colony, at the intersection between La Madrid and the Federal District, arsonists set fire to a Dodge ..

A total of three fires in one night, a sign that arson has not ended in this state in northern Mexico.

Tunis - Curfew?

liberation

14 January 2011 - (Taoufik Ben Brik) Curfew. For whom? For the police and the army perhaps who have deserted the streets the night of Thursday, January 14!

Because the protesters are still there, they are watching over the city.

In the euphoria of the intifada, these luminous and precious days, the Tunisians have respect for nothing: neither curfew nor god. They propose an open Tunis, without limits. A club without cockroaches. A place where anything is possible. An amusement park for adults and children. Hay Ettadhamen, khobsistes district (bread fanatics), the biggest party in the country: a bastille with no centre, no pavements, no cafes, no streets, no dead ends, no intersections, no taxi stands. With crowds and noise. It's like the south of Brazil. Even the sky seems artificial, that first night of curfew not respected. China sky.

The children of the bullet occupy the whole space and adults are learning to go to the adults next door again. A Tunis drawn from doodling. It looks like a pigeon, a hawk or a falcon. One has the feeling of having lived there before even being born. It's carnival. La fiesta. Ezzard. Revolution.

Imagine ... Tunis resonates with a thousand debates in the open air, like at Hyde Park Corner, this corner of London where every passerby is transformed, if the mood takes him, into a speaker. In these populous neighbourhoods, these corners, you can quibble, open out. A woman can spit on the giant poster of Ben Ali.

Hammamet, Tunisia - Police station, party headquarters and luxury residences destroyed. Stores looted

AFP

13/01/2011 - The Tunisian resort of Hammamet, popular with European tourists, was delivered today to looters in late afternoon, according to AFP journalists arrived in this city located 60 km south of Tunis.
A police station, headquarters of the ruling party of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali have been destroyed along with expensive homes, one of which belongs, according to residents, to a relative of the Head of State.
"Death to Ben Ali, " was written on a wall near the residence of the Tunisian president, located on the Corniche, which was completely ransacked. In the street, many barricades were built by passersby while others were looting shops, carrying everything they could lay their hands on.
The looting began after a peaceful march in this tourist town, which has dozens of hotels, and after the funeral of a receptionist at one of these establishments, Zouhair Souissi, who was killed Wednesday by gunfire from the police.

14 January 2011 - Clashes between Congolese students and police have resulted in one to six dead on Thursday on the campus of the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN), reported several media, including RFI and Radio Okapi and the agency DIA.

Cars and houses damaged
Students took to the streets to demonstrate against these unexplained deaths and demand more security on campus. Tunisia is on the brink of revolution

vastminority

TUNISIA is on the brink of revolution, as the people rise up against poverty, corruption and repression.
Internet rumours abound that president/dictator Ben Ali, a friend of France's hated President Sarkozy, will be forced to cede power and flee the country - it is said his family have already fled.
His Thursday night TV speech to the nation - offering major reforms and a lifting of internet censorship in a bid to cling on to power - was dismissed by many as a "dead man talking" and the words of an habitual liar.
He was clearly trying to buy time and wait for the momentum of the revolt to die down, in a trick used by tyrants throughout history.
And there is no sign that an angry population will take him at his word, with more protests planned for Friday in the wake of much bloodshed on the streets.
Social media online have provided the fuel for the uprising, as the tame Tunisian media and the corporate western media have failed to provide the coverage events undoubtedly deserve.
A constant stream of postings on the situation can be seen at the Blogs of War site.

Among the news reported there:
Scores of people have been killed by security forces - 60 or more in total.
President's brother Sofien Ben Ali's new house in Hammamet (built on stolen land) has been looted & burned.
Giant posters of Ben Ali, to be seen throughout Tunisia, have been ripped down and burned.

From De Sidi Bouzid to Bab-el-Oued. Against the reign of the State, power and money

non-fides

text of poster:
Poverty has been growing in North Africa since the beginning of the year. The price of food staples is soaring, there is less and less work, further reducing the pitiful spectrum of everyone’s means of survival. They are bringing out the old trick of the "crisis", making us believe that misery and revolt are new phenomena produced by it, while they are as old as money and authority. It only took a few sparks in Tunisia to set fire to the powderkeg of an already explosive situation, right to Algeria.
Cops attacked, government buildings, schools, customs, warehouses, police stations, car dealerships, banks and businesses targeted, coordinated roadblocks. Contrary to what power and journalistcops are saying, these riots are not limited to a few imaginary categories ("young", "graduates", "unemployed", "extremist") but are expressed widely, and their targets are
clear.
Opposite, the state's response is equally clear: in Tunisia, the cops respond to blocks by sniper fire, leaving dozens dead. In Algeria too, thousands of arrests, torture, detentions and killings, while the convictions have started and will continue. As always, as everywhere, the social war is raging, urging everyone to choose sides.
Already democratic or religious scavengers are rushing to recuperate these rebellions for political purposes, calling for reform or regime change, to divert this anger expressed in deed against any form of regime or government. They are already preparing the afterwards, wanting to replace the control of the dictatorship by democratic control, in other words, develop power to make it acceptable.
We who live in democracy, we can say that even if the daily living conditions are less harsh than under a dictatorship, democratic freedoms have never made us free. The freedom that we desire, that, is total and unconditional. Therefore this insurgent breeze, such as in Greece since December 2008 or in France in November 2005, warms our hearts. That's why we want to blow on the embers, and the spread the revolt.
Here, everywhere, now, all the time.
The revolution must come from the slums, because only bullets and blows come from above.

Starting off from the Canebiere, the crowd calmy reached the Consulate General of Tunisia late afternoon, under the protection of the riot police, chanting "Ben Ali, get lost", "Ben Ali murderer, Sarkozy accomplice" and waving placards denouncing" 60 dead in four days" and photos of the presumed victims covered with blood.

TUNISIA AND ALGERIA... NO EXCUSES FOR OUR LACK OF SUPPORT!!

aimingfurtherstrikingbetter

Algeria and Tunisia have been going through an insurrection of epic dimensions for more than one week due to the worsening of the economical situation and its impact on the lives of millions of people from the lower social strata. In Tunisia the immolation of a fruit vendor in the city of Sidi Bouzid (he literally set himself on fire) was the spark that ignited a whole wave of fresh demos, rioting and brutal police repression with apparently more than 20 people murdered by the bastards in uniform. The rising in the prices of food and other basic goods as well as lack of freedom and rampant unemployment have also caused the riots to expand to the neighbouring country of Algeria.
What really surprises me is that none or at least very few fellow anarchist bloggers (at least among those I check nearly in a daily basis) seem to have bothered in posting something about events of such a magnitude. Neither any action has been planned or carried out in support of the workers, youth and common people bravely fighting their own exploiters and states in the streets of Algiers, Sidi Bouzid, Tunis, and others...
What is going on here?... could it be that the reputation of these 2 countries as "Islamic fundamentalist" dens make anything that may happen in them automatically uninteresting to our ethnocentric westernised mentalities?... can we see that Islamic fundamentalism may well be one of the many ways in which the local elites keep their people alienated and appeased to an extent and that this kind of control could possibly be starting to fade?. Are all Muslims "fundamentalists", "potential terrorists", could they also be rebellious and bear a wish for freedom and anarchy as apparently some grassroot Christians do?... is everything that happens in the territories within the sphere of influence of Islam inevitably biased by religious issues?...Have we already forgotten that the southern bereber region of Algeria (the Kabilia)saw during the whole year of 2001 one of the most inspiring examples of insurrection, anti-police feeling and anti-state self-organisation of the whole decade?...
As far as I can see we are talking about common people whose everyday struggle for sheer survival is meant to worsen to levels we could barely imagine in our "still not that bad" European continent... The fact that so many people literally run to any demonstration in support to the Palestinian struggle while no one seems to give a shit about the Algerian and Tunisian insurrections (comparable at all levels to the Greek riots after the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos and bearing so far a much higher death toll) strikes me as an utterly disgusting omission if not a pure and simple act of revolting hypocrisy.
Anarchist or not, those people are showing dignity, solidarity with each other, bravery and political consciousness and just for that we should support them in the same way we do with other comrades from different parts of the world. We should begin to build bridges and try to communicate (face to face if possible) with people from different cultural backgrounds and realities regardless the way in which they may be depicted or stereotyped by the mainstream media. Perhaps those about whom we know nothing today turn into the comrades of tomorrow.
And just to finish let me make a humble suggestion. A demo in support for those comrades in the Thessaloniki trial has been called for the 14 of January at 14:00 h in front of the Greek Embassy in London. For those who might not know this, the Algerian Embassy is also located in the Holland Park area (54, Holland Park), that is relatively close to the Greek one. Why not walking to this other embassy as well a little bit later with a banner or something?. Why not trying to increase the scope of our international solidarity by also rallying to the Tunisian embassy, located in Knightsbridge, close to the Albert Memorial (29 Princes Gate)?. Actually the 3 embassies are relatively close to each other so distance or transport is not a problem. See map here:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&rlz=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=algerian+embassy&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=algerian+embassy&hnear=Islington&ei=FictTazaGeOAhAf5wf3FCQ&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=image&resnum=2&ved=0CAcQtgMwAQ&iwloc=16297122620476754988

I am sure that the people literally fighting for their lives in Tunisia and Algeria would welcome any act of support, any action that could make them see that they are not alone and someone knows what is happening beyond the borders of their countries.
They deserve this and more... the same as we would if we found ourselves in a similar situation.
