3 Dec. Mayotte, or Mahoré, in the Indian Ocean : Demonstrations against the high cost of living turned into clashes with the police Wednesday morning on Petite-Terre, the island with the airport of Mayotte. The demonstrators had erected barricades on the main road linking the airport to Dzaoudzi, where the embarkment of the barge linking Petite-Terre(15 square kilometres) and, to the west, Grande-Terre (363 square kilometres), the main island which houses the prefecture of Mamoudzou. A 2 kilometre straight of sea separates the two islands. The guards responded to stone-throwing with teargas grenades and Flash-balls.
A policeman was seriously wounded during the demonstrations. The minister for overseas Marie-Luce Penchard called for calm. Reinforcements arrived from the Réunion, the other French island in the Indian Ocean.
The incidents took place during a demonstration sparked off early Wednesday in response to the call of the “collective of lost citizens of Labattoir and Pamandzi” (in Petite-Terre). The troubles broke out on the eve of a meeting of the general council that was to decide on Thursday upon a rise in price of the tickets of the barges linking the two parts of Mayotte. (UMP)
