GREECE - 36Precinct guards removed

Minister orders police to stop standing watch outside stations after armed attack
In a response to an armed attack earlier this week on a police station in an Athens suburb, Citizens’ Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said yesterday that he was ordering the removal of all guards from police precincts in a bid to stop them from being a target for terrorists.
Two gunmen fired almost 100 rounds at the police station in Aghia Paraskevi, northeastern Athens, on Tuesday night, injuring six policemen. One of those, a trainee policewoman, was said to be in critical but stable condition after undergoing extensive surgery. The other officer was in serious but stable condition.
Chysochoidis said that he was issuing an order for some 2,000 special guards, policemen with just basic training, to be removed from guard duty at the country police stations.
These officers will instead be assigned to administrative duties or foot patrols.
“Police precincts are not forts, they are there to serve the public,” said Chrysochoidis, adding that the aim was for police stations to “remain open to citizens so they can offer immediate and quality service, not to be turned into areas of fear and hassle.”
The minister said the government had no plans to review anti-terrorism laws, suggesting that a more open approach would be the best way to defeat urban guerrillas.
“The best response to terrorism is not fear and the curtailment of rights but more democracy,” said Chrysochoidis. “The issue is to track down and arrest the perpetrators as soon as possible and not to shape our policy according to the actions of criminals.”
It was not clear how the police stations will be guarded from now on, although it seems likely that guards will be posted inside the buildings. The previous government had examined various options following an armed attack by the Sect of Revolutionaries on a police station in Korydallos, southwest Athens, in February. The idea of installing a CCTV system to monitor the exterior of precincts was set aside because it was too expensive, sources said.

A recent attack on the Italian-Greek Chamber of Commerce has been claimed by a group of insurrectionalist anarchists, the ‘Council for the destruction of order’. In a communique the group explains that the bomb attack on the building is a ‘response to the arrest in Greece of Italian anarchist Alfredo Bonanno for robbery’.

ON THE INCARCERATION OF CHRISTOS STRATIGOPOULOS AND ALFREDO BONANNO

It has now been confirmed that our comrades, along with all those held in the prison of Amfissa, are struggling to survive under appalling conditions.

In fact the Amfissa establishment is not a prison but a concentration camp. Our comrades are two of 50 men held locked all together in one cell 20 hours a day.

The place is infested with cockroaches, lice and fleas. Last week there was no water for two days, toilets not working, with indescribable consequences and added health risks for all prisoners.

Upon his arrest lawyers made an application for bail for Alfredo due to his age, the minor charges against him, and his health condition, including diabetes. Not only was this was refused by the instructing judge in Trikala, the comrades were sent to Amfissa, one of the worst hellholes in Greece. One can only draw one’s own conclusions.

A further application for bail for Alfredo was made by his lawyer on October 11, on medical grounds. The application was backed with numerous health reports translated from Italian and papers showing that he had been released from prison to house arrest due to his health condition. This has been ignored. A report from Trikala hospital where Alfredo was taken following his arrest is being witheld by police. The intentions of the Greek authorities couldn’t be more clear.

Enclosed is the translation of a letter sent by Christos to the new Greek minister of justice denouncing the concentration camp of Amfissa, left unscathed by the recent mutinies and mass hungerstrikes in Greek prisons that involved thousands of prisoners.

Revolutionary solidarity to Alfredo, Christos and all comrades and rebels prisoners of the State.

Destroy all prisons.

KALASHNIKOV ATTACK ON ATHENS POLICE STATION

27 October, Agia Paraskevi police station, Athens, is attacked at 21.40 by three persons on two motorbikes. They fired Kalashnikov automatic weapons, shooting dozens of bullets against the police station, and then disappeared. A manhunt is currently underway to identify and arrest them. Four police officers - a woman and three men - were injured. Two of them are said to have received bullets in the chest and abdomen and to be in a serious condition.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the action, which took place after Greece's new Socialist government promised to crack down on anarchist and far-left militant groups and backed this up with increasingly repressive measures such as a massive presence of cops in the centre of Athens, ID checks, random beatings, etc., and now offering a reward for the capture of three anarchist comrades.

NEW SOCIALIST MINISTER OFFERS REWARD FOR CAPTURE OF WANTED ANARCHISTS

In Athens, on 26th Oct 2009, the new minister of Public order Mr Chrysohoidis (honoured by the CIA for the capture of the 17 November group in 2002), issued a Government statement offering a 600.000€ reward for information leading to the arrest of three anarchist comrades Symeon Seisidis, Marios Seisidis and Gregory Tsironis.

Fugitives since 2005 following the bank robbery of the National Bank in the centre of Athens at which anarchist comrade Yiannis Dimitrakis was shot and arrested, they are accused of “terrorist” acts and armed robbery.

From a simple bank robbery that went wrong, the cops and the media have never lost an occasion to accuse the comrades in absentia of numerous bank robberies and armed attacks against State and capitalist targets.

Fuck off snitches, forward comrades!

Carmel Agrexco blockaders in court:

On the 26th - 29th October 2009 two women will be put on trial for
taking part in a blockade of Israeli company Carmel Agrexco’ produce
warehouse during
the 'Bloody Valentine' Week of Action.

They are accused of obstructing police officers and assaulting a police
officer during the women only action. This is only the second time that
people have been brought to court for actions against Carmel Agrexco in
over 5 years of sustained direct action at the London depot.

The action was taken in solidarity with the Palestinian people on whose
land the flowers, fruits and vegetables are grown and harvested. The
action came in the aftermath of the 3-week Israeli invasion of Gaza in
which more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed. Carmel-Agrexco is the
Israeli national exporter of fruit and vegetables and imports large
quantities of goods from illegal Israeli settlements on occupied
Palestinian land. As feminists and as Palestinian solidarity activists,
the women blockading Agrexco aimed to challenge the oppression of
Palestinians by targeting a tool of the occupation.

According to a statement the activists released prior to their trial:
Carmel Agrexco directly profits from the Israeli occupation, which
colonises Palestine. These goods are grown in the rich soils of the
Jordan Valley where the indigenous people are prevented from building
houses, schools, accessing water. Palestinians, including many children,
work and are exploited in Agrexco-owned settlement packing houses. The
sale and distribution of goods produced in settlements must be resisted
in the countries which receive them as exports. The UK is the most
important
export market for Agrexco and so we think that challenging and
disrupting their business here is important.

During previous direct actions the police have been reluctant to arrest
any protestors – even when they have invaded the warehouses, destroyed
goods and locked on to the gates for over 10 hours. Evidence strongly
suggests that this is a result of collusion between Agrexco and the
local
police. In the first (and until now, only) trial of direct action
activists at the depot in 2006, the case collapsed after evidence of
Carmel-Agrexco's dealings with illegal settlements was disclosed.

The charges were dropped and subsequent actions no longer lead to court
cases.

This action, undeniably feminist in spirit, has resulted in the first
people being brought to trial for activities against Agrexco since 2006.
The systematic and entrenched sexism we know exists within the police
force was clearly reflected in the misogynistic comments and treatment
these women received during the action. In this gendered context, we ask
ourselves why the police and CPS have decided to try this case, rather
than the 30+ others preceding it

This case is crucial in the continuing campaign against Carmel Agrexco.
Please spread the word about the trial, post the defendants’ statement
widely and take action against Carmel Agrexco.

LETTER FROM CHRISTOS STRATIGOPOULOS TO NEW GREEK MINISTER OF JUSTICE

LETTER FROM CHRISTOS STRATIGOPOULOS TO NEW GREEK MINISTER OF JUSTICE HARIS KASTANIDIS

Dear Minister

I am an anarchist recently imprisoned in Amfissa prison. Obviously, I am as related with socialism as you are with anti-authoritarianism. I say this because I have just heard that Mr George Papandreou insisted that his new ministers ‘behave as antiauthoritarians towards authority’.

Personally, I have always been a supporter of specific actions and not on the contrary of abstract words and that is the reason why I presently find myself in prison and not, naturally, for ideological reasons.

I do not wish to tire you with my words, esteemed minister of justice, but I say to you directly that if I had the possibility to decide for the prison system personally I would destroy everything or at least close everything. Personally I have the possibility of dreaming of a different form of social restitution of debt, of so-called justice, that I cannot imagine you would ever be in a position to support. But I want to inform you, if you don’t already know it, that Greek prisons, especially this one of Amfissa where I am presently being held, are one step away from the Nazi concentration camps or the corresponding gulags that existed in the countries of so-called real socialism. As new minister of justice, if you were to visit the prisons you could not fail to confirm the truth of my words.

Finally I want to ask one last question. What do you intend to do about the present conditions in Greek prisons Mr Minister? Do you want to continue to coop men up like mice or are you indeed able to create I don’t say good but at least acceptable conditions for all prisoners. You know perhaps that the very custodians of your laws refer to the prison of Amfissa as a crematorium.

With much reflection

Christos Stratigopoulos

CONCERNING TWO ANARCHISTS AND A BANK ROBBERY

It's an old story, stuff of the last century. Two anarchists are arrested following a bank strike. The first robbed it, arm in hand. They say the second helped him by looking after the money. It happened in a small town in Greece on October 1. So? Such things happen.
And then that country is far away, with an incomprehensible untranslatable language. Who do you think will be interested? The robber is Christos Stratigopulos, already arrested and sentenced in Italy about fifteen years ago on a similar charge.
After doing his time he went back to Greece. Remembered by few, unknown to most..
The other arrested, on the other hand, is Alfredo Bonanno. Yes, him; who hasn't heard his name?
In its small way the news soon went round the world, thrown out by many press agencies: 'one of the major theoreticians of insurrectionalist anarchism', 'one of the major ideologues of anarchism', 'anarchist writer and activist', 'the fugitive international anarchist robber', 'theoretician of revolutionary violence'
has once again ended up in prison. The men of both Greek and Italian anti-terrorism rushed to the scene, ready to exploit the appetizing occasion.
All the elements for building a fine theorem are there: a country where there are still blazing hotbeds following the great insurrectional blaze that spread like wildfire last December, a Greek anarchist active in the movement, a foreign anarchist known for his anarchist theories who went around the country doing talks, a robbed bank.
Christos has taken full responsibility for the gesture that was motivated by economic necessity, denying any involvement of Alfredo. But the judge obviously didn't believe it. Both are therefore still in prison. The first, because he dared to stretch out his hand to take the wealth of the bosses rather than resign himself to a life of miseria. Moreover, he is an anarchist. The second because... because... because perhaps he helped his comrade. And it's sure that he is an anarchist. That is enough.
Outside, solidarity starts to be organised. Money starts to be gathered, initiatives are prepared. But not only. The two prisoners receive explosive greetings from Athens, from the group Conspiracy of Cells of Fire, just after disturbing the crowning of the new Greek prime minister. In Villejuif in France someone pays them homage by shattering the windows of the Socialist Party. One of the beauties of anarchism is that it does not recognise borders. And in Italy?
Well, here one limits oneself to communicating the news, reporting the press bulletins of the journalists faithfully and coldly. No comment. The extensors of the daily virtual communiques keep quiet. The hoers of their militant back gardens shut up. All quiet the little strategists of the correct alliances. The movement has become a community, anybody that doesn't share the rules and the language doesn't exist. They have no title. Those who are in a hurry to follow the masses have forgotten individuals? Perhaps it's better that way. Better a sincere silence, if in the face of such a deed one doesn't know how to say anything other than some hypocritical chatter about solidarity. Let's keep that for the misadventures of stalinists & various ruins. Or leave it to a few fascists of third millenium, who in one of their forums paid 'honour' to the two arrested anarchists.
It's old stuff, of the last century. Two anarchists arrested following a bank robbery. The first is 46 years old, the second, 72. Whether guilty or innocent, for their being anarchists they don't even have the mitigating circumstances of the infantile malady of extremism. Headstrong as they are, they haven't understood that it is time to ride the waves of the social movement, to make a presidium about who knows what in front of the places of power, to be social workers of the damned of the earth. No, they haven't understood. The dream they have in their hearts is too big to conform to the tick-tock of modern times.
No forgiveness, no mercy.
Addio Lugano bella.

Angry News from around the world

Rebels by choice or necessity, men, women and children everywhere are fighting for their livliehood, their dignity, their freedom, their lives. Tabloid headlines continue to scream that a few bad apples are spoiling an otherwise decent world, but fewer and fewer people are being duped.
Rebellion illuminates, takes us beyond the pale of human misery out of the enclosures of obedience into a world without limits where bad passions awaken, charging the body and clearing the mind. Action clears the air: the compartmentalisation of the world of politics dissolves as immediacy meets infinity and self-interest expands into vibrant love and solidarity.
It is impossible to know everything that is happening, impossible to tell all the great—and bad—news. A little is all we need. It helps put the world the right way up. Makes it a place that we want to live in, take from, give to, enjoy, and, above all, move in to attack its enemies. We are not the insensate beings the system would like us to be. We can laugh with side-splitting laughter but we can also cry tears of anger. For it is only in the totality of the struggle reached by entering the great flux of life, chaos valiantly freed from the tyranny of reason, that pain can become joy and loss become full, not empty.
There is a certain urgency in this message. The urgency of desire. The will to put an end to suffering in its rational, multidimensional forms, dragged through the ages with poisonous insensitivity to reach unprecedented levels thanks to the investment of heartless science and anti-life technology. We are not primitivists, but we know that this world must disappear because it is only through the destructive process that there can be renewal, and soon even the ruins will be so toxic that nothing new will grow. Only through the destructive experience will we be able to reactivate our feelings, our intellect, our creative and aesthetic desires. Not to go backward. Not to go forward. To go elsewhere, beyond the limits of our possibilities and the extremes of our passions. To create a new world starting from each and every individual organising their struggle and their life with whom they please, without bosses or slaves.
What follows are words, just words. They are free to roam subversively into the consciousness of the reader in order to be re-elaborated. They tell but they also ask. They inform but also question. They describe action but are also theory. They are the culmination of what came before, and the beginning of what will come tomorrow. And they provide some indications in the eternal quest: what can we do? They are an open invitation, and we accept. Do you?
